Studio Visit with Alexander Chun
In the run up to The Art Society’s exhibition This is Art Soc! opening at Taste this March, our website coordinator Isobel joined artist and Art Soc member, Alexander Chun, in his dorm/studio. Read what Alexander shared about his art-making process and journey below…
A third year International Relations and Modern History student from Massachusetts, Alexander has been an active member of Art Soc and the creative community in St Andrews for the past two years.
Alexander had a childhood love of tactile crafts like modelling clay, but it wasn’t until a 9th grade ‘art across the curriculum’ project on Pride and Prejudice that he began to try out new techniques and materials.
Today. Alexander’s St. Andrews dorm room is full of a wide range of art projects, primarily in embroidery. Recent forays into stained glass have proved challenging as it is hard to find space to solder while in university accommodation! This interest in three dimensional crafts has feed into their introduction of beading into embroidery projects.
Alexander’s eye for colourful pattern, textiles, and bold design is key to his involvement in the new Saints LGBT+ Fashion show and Drag performance.
A great enjoyer of Art Soc’s Lino cutting events, Alexander is knowledgeable about numerous media and fuelled by a keen hands-on attitude. We are impressed by their enterprise as their innovative ‘Dr Strange’ themed tarot cards were developed into metal pin badges for sale from a US based company.
We are very excited to see more of Alexander’s work in out upcoming exhibiton at Taste.
Thanks Alexander for having us!
